The Chorus will perform Randall Thompson’s “Alleluia” on December 14. This work was commissioned in 1940 for the opening of the Tanglewood Music Center by Serge Koussevitsky, and would have been familiar to many by 1943. Its somber, emotional tones reflect the atmosphere of the wartime years in which it was written. It has been sung at Tanglewood every year since, and a number of times by the Jamestown Community Chorus. “Alleluia” is the only word in the piece besides the final “amen”.
