The Chorus Celebrates Shakespeare with Two Spring Concerts

The Chorus will celebrate Shakespeare with two spring concerts entitled “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” on Saturday, May 2 at 7:30 pm and on Sunday, May 3 at 3 pm.  Both concerts will be at Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Ave. in Jamestown.

The concert will feature music from a Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, Cymbeline, Henry VIII as well as from Shakespeares’s sonnets. In addition, the concert will include popular music with strong connections to Shakespeare, such as “Something’s Coming” from West Side Story and “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” by Cole Porter, a lyricist who believed that a good knowledge of Shakespeare would “make them all kowtow.”

Choral and ensemble pieces span time periods from the 16th century to arrangements composed in 2014.

“Shakespeare’s writings called out to be set to music,” said Bruce J. Whitehouse, JCC Choral Director. “Over the years, great music has been written using Shakespearean lyrics. We want to celebrate The Bard by sharing some of this music with our audience.”

Highlighting the concert will be three Shakespeare Songs by Vaughan-Williams including “Full Fathom Five” from The Tempest in which voices replicate the sound of gongs and bells on the ocean.  Also included is the beautiful Dickau rendition of “If Music Be the Food of Love” from Twelfth Night and “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day” from the sonnet by the same name and music by James Mulholland.

Tickets are $15, $12 for seniors and children. Tickets are available at the door, through chorus members, at Baker’s Pharmacy, Jamestown Hardware and the Secret Garden. They also may be reserved by calling 423-1574.
